GGB Leeds: Bras and Moonlight

Bras & Moonlight brunch in honor of Carrie Fisher!

“I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.”

– Carrie Fisher

The passing of Carrie Fisher was a tragic day for many geek girls across the planet. The actress behind the quintessential sci-fi heroine, Princess Leia Organa, was gone. We at Geek Girl Brunch Leeds decided to devote our February gathering to her memory and raise funds for the charity Mind, due to Ms. Fisher’s commitment to mental health awareness. In acknowledgement of Ms. Fisher’s famous quotation about her preferred obituary, we named this assembly “Bras and Moonlight”.

Our venue was Carluccio’s – an Italian restaurant in the heart of the city, where we decorated our table with paper garlands of little cutout Leias. As the ladies tucked into pancakes, croissants and pastries, we had a couple of fun activities based around our theme. The first was a round of picture bingo, where our guests used ink dabbers to mark bingo cards donning cartoon images of various bras and Star Wars paraphernalia.  Our second event was a tricky quiz on the life and works of Carrie Fisher herself. Prizes won included copies of Ms. Fisher’s book The Princess Diarist, and a gift voucher for a local department store that’s famed for its selection of lingerie!

Brunch was followed by our usual geeky shopping trip around the city centre, which on this occasion included a complimentary swag bag from our good friends at Travelling Man. After a good long browse, many of us were peckish again, and so we took the opportunity to check out another Leeds eatery, Le Pain Quotidien, for some post-shopping nummies including croissants, muffins and hot chocolate.

A great time was had by all, and we made sure we drank a toast to the memory of our beloved Princess. She will be much missed – but her legacy will last forever.
