GGB Austin’s “Animated August” Brunch

GGB Austin’s “Animated August” Brunch

Last month, members of the Austin GGB chapter got together for some “animated” conversation at our “August Animation” Brunch. We met up at Punch Bowl Social at the trendy Domain and talked about all our favorite animated media. In true GGB fashion, we also ended up on extremely entertaining tangents including books, sushi, musicals, and even – ahem – Texas “adult toy” laws!

Bev’s Breakfast Bowl and Katie’s Potatoes!

As expected, Disney was brought up by nearly all our brunchettes, with Beauty and the Beast taking the top spot, with the most mentions as our favorite Disney animated movie. Katie, while a fan of recent Disney films like Encanto, named the beloved classic Robin Hood as one of her favorites. New officer Angela brought up her love of Batman: The Animated Series (and Batman in general!), and many of us shared her love for the iconic and groundbreaking show.

Carolina was recently introduced to The Simpsons, and has been on quite an impressive binge for a while (she’s currently on season 30!!!). Officer Vanessa also mentioned The Simpsons, saying that the show had such an impact on her growing up, that she often relates to the world in Simpsons references.

Anime was also a frequent topic, and no show was mentioned more than the iconic Sailor Moon, however there was a lot of love for other anime as well. Eliza loves staples such as Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, and Attack on Titan, while Julia loves old school anime series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, and crucially reminded us to mention Studio Ghibli!

There was a lot of enthusiasm in general for some more old-school animation. Bev brought up her love of Looney Tunes, and introduced most of us to Space Pirate Captain Harlock. Bringing us back into the present day, we gushed about how amazing the SpiderVerse movies are, and how much we can’t wait to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem!

We talked forever about so many other animated masterpieces, from classics like Saturday Morning cartoons, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast, Don Bluth movies, the Star Wars animated series, and old Spider-Man cartoons, to more modern ones like Your Name, Kakegurui, Big Mouth, Gumball, Over the Garden Wall, Arcane: League of Legends, and Weathering With You. As with so many of our geek loves, there’s seemingly no end to our passion and appetite for everything animated!

All decked out in our favorite animated apparel!

Geek Girl Brunch Austin will return soon for an *outer space* themed September brunch!
