GGB Glasgow: 2019 Roundup

GGB Glasgow: 2019 Roundup

Oops…

Please excuse the absence. Life has a habit of getting in the way when you’re trying to have fun. We were rather lax in updating ye olde brunch blog towards the end of last year, but here’s a little roundup of all the things we got up to in the back half of 2019.

August: Star Trek Brunch

It’s brunch Jim, but not as we know it!

The Glasgow crew welcomed a whole bunch of new ensigns back in August, making for one of our best attended brunches ever! Special mention has to go to Kirsty (accompanying one of the brunchettes) who was a VERY GOOD GIRL and therefore promptly promoted to First Officer. We beamed down on one of the hottest days of the year to Sloans Bar and Restaurant, which we all agreed served much tastier food than your average replicator. Everyone was presented with a pair of Vulcan ears and an awesome 3D printed communicator badge. Quapla!

A really interesting conversation was had about our shared experiences with gatekeeping in fandoms. We agreed that different people engage with fandoms in different ways (it’s not all about remembering trivia!), which can be off-putting for newbies. The Glasgow officers were keen to point out that brunch themes are just a bit of fun and shouldn’t hold anyone back from attending. Sometimes it seems like you’re the only one who hasn’t see Firefly or Supernatural, but that doesn’t mean you can’t come along and fly your geek flag proudly.

It was also a great opportunity to talk to our members about what they want to see from our meetups. We discussed possible themes for next year, brunch events in different cities, and even meetups in between brunches like cinema tips and visits to comic cons.

October: Ghostbusters Brunch

What better way to celebrate the 35 year anniversary of the 80s classic Ghostbusters than to have an entire brunch themed around it? We returned to one of our favourite haunts (excuse the awful pun): The Butterfly and Pig.

Officer A went slightly bananas on etsy and ordered a slime green table cloth, green balloons, and Ghostbusters cocktail sticks, which the bemused serving staff patiently let us display. Officer K brought themed Funko Pops and Playmobile figures to ensure the table was suitably decorated. On top of all that, one of our beloved brunchettes outdid herself and made individual boxes of slime for everyone which was an epic addition.

We visited this venue for our Labyrinth themed brunch last year and had maaayyybe forgotten how big the portions of food were. Most of ended up feeling like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man by the time we were finished.

December: Christmas Drinks

Christmas is always a super busy time of year. Rather than stressing about a December brunch we decided to meet up at Drury Street Bar for drinks instead. It was RAMMED but somehow we still managed to get a table.

Seeing familiar faces in amongst the festive frenzy was really lovely and we even managed a geeky secret Santa present swap!

Looking forward to 2020!

We’ve got so much planned for this year and we can’t wait to catch up with everyone. Our brunch themes for 2020 will be:

  • February: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
  • April: Monty Python
  • June: She-Ra (And The Princesses of Power)
  • August: The Princess Bride
  • October: Flash Gordon

Hope to see you there!
