Geek Girl Brunch Gainesville Loves Mermaids
Gainesville’s Mermaids Brunch
Geek Girl Brunch’s November brunch can be described with one hashtag: #shellyeah! It was a mermaid-themed brunch at Loosey’s Bar & Table in Haile Plantation. Brunchettes brought their best thingamabobs and whatsits because the mermaid style was amazing!
Mermaids can be beautiful, horrifying, silly and dangerous. They have been the subject of myths, novels, and animated Disney films. In a poll, Gainesville brunchettes voted mythological mermaids are their favorite, as opposed to pretty, scary and animated mermaids.
Because of their wide breadth, mermaids were the perfect choice for a Gainesville brunch! In fact, North-Central Florida has a close connection with mermaids. Weeki Wachee is known for having enchanted springs where mermaids dwell. The springs are one of the deepest, naturally formed underwater caverns in the United States. It’s so deep that the bottom has never been found! Each day, more than 117 million gallons of fresh water bubbles up out of subterranean caverns. The mermaids swim 16 to 20 feet below the surface, where the current runs 5 miles an hour. At Weeki Wachee Springs State Park you can see live mermaid shows, take boating tours and swim in the 70-degree waters.
Brunchettes received a mermaid inspired swag bag put together by officers Emily and Megan. It included aquatic stickers, candy, a cable bite phone charger accessory, and the traditional rubber duck. The rubber duckie this month was also a mermaid!
