GGB Phoenix – Tim Burton Brunch
In October, the ladies of Geek Girl Brunch Phoenix had a wickedly exciting Tim Burton brunch. Tim Burton brought to the screen some of our favorite movies of all time, including:
- Edward Scissorhands
- Nightmare Before Christmas
- Mars Attacks!
- Ed Wood
- Corpse Bride
- Beetlejuice
- Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
- Frankenweenie
We originally thought to have a brunch theme around one of the movies but couldn’t decide which, so we named our brunch after Tim Burton himself! October was the perfect month for this brunch theme, and our brunchettes were more than willing to celebrate this theme.
Since the prolific director also directed Batman and Batman Returns, we chose local restaurant Carlsbad Tavern as our brunch spot. Carlsbad Tavern is known for its bat-cave themed décor and tasty New Mexican brunch menu, that includes a MIMOSA FIESTA (unlimited mimosas during brunch). Other top items on the brunch menu include carne adovada with eggs, pollo chilaquiles, and eggs benedict with jalapeño hollandaise sauce. *Delish!*
Several of our brunchettes drove from hours away to join us for brunch, so we were hugely thankful for their willingness to travel to see friends. We also had many of our ladies dress in Tim Burton-themed cosplay and fandom wear, representing popular characters like Jack Skellington and Sally, Beetlejuice and Lydia, and the Corpse Bride.
As we worked our way through brunch, we played a fun game of GGB (Geek Girl Bingo). This icebreaker gave us all a chance to get to know each other better and get ourselves in the mood for the upcoming Halloween holiday. The brunchette who called BINGO first not only earned bragging rights, she also won this fantastic Jack Skellington statuette:
We also had a raffle to give out fantastic Tim Burton prizes like Jack Skellington and Sally sunglasses, and gift cards, courtesy of Zia Record Exchange. Huge thank you to Zia, an Arizona based novelty and gifts retailer that specializes in geeky goods.
By the end of brunch, every brunchette went home with full tummies, new friends, and these incredibly artistic Tim-Burton themed sugar cookies, courtesy of QZcookies! Look at the amazing artwork involved in this dessert!
Thank you to all of the girls who attended Tim Burton Brunch! Did you snap a photo of our brunch? Make sure to tag GGB Phoenix on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, or use our hashtag #ggbphx.
Our next brunch takes place during Phoenix Fan Fest. We will have an early evening “brunch” aka happy hour in Downtown Phoenix after the first day of con. This is our last brunch of the year, and we’re making it co-ed so that brunchettes can attend with their friends and family members who come with them to Fan Fest. See you there!
