GGB Phoenix – Bookworm Brunch
In June, the Phoenix brunchettes had a Bookworm Brunch at the independent bookseller, Changing Hands Bookstore. Changing Hands often hosts author events and workshops, so they gave us free access to the meeting room at their Tempe location. During the summer months in Phoenix, you have to stay inside, so we took full advantage of being inside a bookstore. It was a bookworm’s dream to peruse the aisles and kitschy tchotchkes available at Changing Hands!
After shopping the bookstore, brunchettes went to the Wildflower Bread Company, which is a restaurant attached to Changing Hands via an open archway. Our bookworms ordered our brunch food to go, and brought it back to the meetup room. Wildflower has delicious breakfast items like banana walnut pancakes, frittatas, breakfast bowls and brioche french toast. They were very accommodating for our brunchettes, and the Wildflower lemonades are to-die-for.
Bookworm brunch was a two-part event. Participants brought one book to swap with a fellow brunchette, and a second book to donate to a local retirement community as part of our #GGBDoBetter movement. We drew numbers similar to a white elephant party, and each bookworm had the chance to pick out a new book for their collection. We “pitched” the books we brought, so that everyone had a sense for the storyline they were about to be engrossed in. At the end of the selection process, we spent time flipping through our new finds, chatting about our favorite authors, and even exchanging stories about job opportunities and life in geeky Phoenix.
Not only did we go home with a new-to-us book, our bookworms also received a fun geeky pin from Changing Hands, and the feel-good vibes knowing that our #GGBDoBetter book donations might find a loving home with an elderly person in our community. We also put together a short video showing off the fun we had at Bookworm Brunch (click here to watch on YouTube). Thank you to all of the girls who attended Bookworm Brunch. If you haven’t already, please follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook!
Our next meetup is an ’80s themed Stranger Things brunch. Hope we don’t see you in the Upside Down!
