GGB Ft. Lauderdale: Descendants: A Disney Villains Brunch
July 2nd, the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Geek Girl Brunch met at Sage French Cafe for our July Brunch to celebrate Disney’s Descendants 2 movie and their Disney Villain parents.
Officer Cristy loves Sage and ran in one rainy morning to see if they were interested in hosting our brunchettes for July. Angeliki, Events Coordinator at Sage, happened to be there and was so excited to host our girls that we made arrangements on the spot. Sage’s black and white, fleur-de-lis aesthetic was perfect for our evil to the core theme. Tables were decorated with our goody swag bag and with paper crafts and DIY efforts by our crafty officers. Decorations included apple Mylar balloons with Descendants “D” and vines appliques and the kids’ logos.
Goody bags included unique crafts by and for the Ft. Lauderdale chapter. Officers created fold-over-elastic hair ties/ bracelets with Disney Descendants prints and glitter royal blue, crown and heart paper craft straws, and Disney Villain Funko boxes. Purple poison bottle glitter charms, Jolly Rancher pops, and stickers also made their ways into the bags.
This month, the officers embarked on creating gift sets for raffles. Raffle items included a three-book set of the Descendants Isle of the Lost YA novels, a Mal doll, a couple of Disney Descendants logo keychains, Descendants bookmarks, the Fairest of Them All novel (a take on Snow White told through the Evil Queen’s perspective), a Maleficent notebook, and Jay and Mal Funko Pops.
Surrounding the July brunch – end of June and through July – the brunchettes have been invited to preview screenings of some of summer’s biggest blockbuster movies including Baby Driver and War for the Planet of the Apes. Thanks to Officer Aurora for all her hard work in finding screenings and inviting all our brunchettes. Visit our chapter Facebook page and follow us to keep current on her updates.
We’re also coordinating casual non-brunch meetups for Nerd Nite at Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park on July 25th and for Florida Supercon on the last weekend of July. Tickets for Nerd Nite Ft. Lauderdale are available on Meetup, and tickets and event info for Florida Supercon are available on their website and Facebook. Officer Cristy has volunteered to run a knitting program at the North Regional/ Broward College Library at the end of July and beginning of August. Information is available on the website.
