GGB Miami: YA Badass Bitches Brunch

GGB Miami: YA Badass Bitches Brunch

Our first official 2017 brunch was held in February. A lot of the Brunchettes are avid readers, favoring the young adult genre. We wanted to honor young female characters, whom henceforth we dub, YA Badass Bitches. Our Miami weather in February is prime, so we decided to go with an outdoor venue. We brunched in the gardens of a quaint little place called Crackers. They specialize in southern cuisine with a south Florida twist. They were extremely pleasant and catered to our 20 Brunchettes without fail. One of the favorite dishes was a spin on French toast integrating local Cuban culture; Cuban bread French toast, drizzled with melted guava and cream cheese. Thrown in with a few fried green tomatoes and overflowing mimosas, we were in brunch heaven.

In true GGB Miami fashion, the brunch theme outfits were remarkable. The three GGB Miami officers embodied the spirits of our brunch theme as Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter series, Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson series, and an encompassing outfit honoring the March sisters, from Little Women. Many of our members had fun dressing up for this brunch. We had Pawnee goddesses, a few Hermione’s and our very own Hester, proudly displaying a scarlet A.

The Miami officers take great effort and pride in trying to creatively give all our attending brunchettes a little piece of our theme to take home. This event’s swag featured pieces that connected personally with featured YA Badass Bitches. We had Katniss’s mocking jay pin because Katniss taught us to survive.

Hermione taught us that reading could potentially save your life, so we gave each of the brunchette’s a time turner necklace. Annabeth Chase taught us knowledge is one of the greatest weapons in one’s arsenal, so we featured Seaweed Brain green eyeshadow because we know Percy wouldn’t have made it through Hades without Wisdom’s daughter. We had Throne of Glass bookmarks because Celaena taught us we could rattle the stars. The elf stones from The Shannara Chronicles were included because Amberle taught us that a princess can also be a hero. Tris from Divergent taught us to be brave, so we paid her tribute by including several vials of serums; memory, death, truth, peace, and fear. Also included were shadow hunter tattoos from The Mortal Instruments series because Clary taught us to fight. Lavana gray eyeshadow because The Lunar Chronicles is an amazing series packed full of girl power and Cinder taught us its ok to be different. We were also able to raffle a few fandom necklaces inspired by our brunch theme. Additionally, we started off a new brunch tradition by asking all the girls to bring a book they would like to donate to a fellow brunchette. We hope to continue book swapping at future brunches.

Since this was a brunch inspired by strong women of action, we announced the kick off to GGB Miami’s #ggbdobetter campaign in which we encouraged all our brunchettes to make donations to help fund the ACLU foundation, a leading civil liberties advocate. We feel a lot of ugly is going on in the world and as a fierce female community we can help make a difference. We will be giving out more information regarding GGB Miami’s #ggbdobetter in our upcoming brunches.
