GGB Milwaukee’s Free Comic Book Day Comic Shop Hop

Six comic shops in the Milwaukee metropolitan area participated in Free Comic Book Day, so the ladies of GGB MKE made it their mission to hit each and every one.

We started out with brunch, at the site of our launch brunch, Cafe Hollander. Even though it was Mother’s Day weekend, and the Susan G. Komen race was that morning, they were very accommodating of our small but mighty group of five. Our geek girls showed up in their best comic-based gear to enjoy fancy pancakes and bison eggs benedict and fill up on caffeine before a long day of comic shopping.

Only four of us headed out for our shopping spree (our fifth geek girl had a standing date to see Captain America: Civil War, which we certainly could not fault her for), but first we made a pit stop for some ice cream. SHOPPING FUEL! There’s an excellent local artisan ice cream shop called Purple Door that has a great selection of unique flavors and the tastiest, thickest waffle cones ever.

Full of sugar and caffeine, we headed out to our first stop, one of the four Collector’s Edge locations participating in FCBD. It was hard not to blow our entire comic budget at the first stop, but we did a pretty good job of pacing ourselves. Even with the two books per person policies, we all managed to get everything we wanted since we made so many stops. Unfortunately none of the stores in the Milwaukee area had any of the merchandise, but we spent so much money on comics we weren’t too let down.

One of our last stops had two geek girls working the registers – in full HP house regalia – and we immediately made it a goal to visit that shop more regularly. Also, to recruit them!

Our next outing will be a larger field trip, with significant others and children invited along (as well as other family members). We figure since we hear so much about them we should all get to know them. But after that we’ll be back to regularly scheduled geek girl only events!
