Geek Girl of the Month – Gin

Geek Girl of the Month – Gin

Here at Geek Girl Brunch we are proud of our many accomplished members and officers. That’s why we decided to start a new blog series called “Geek Girl of the Month”. Each month we will highlight an amazing member of our community with a special post.

This month, we have chosen Gin from GGB Leeds! Gin was nominated by her fellow GGB officer Hannah.

Bio: Gin started to create jewelry inspired by science and her travels after moving to the UK in June 2015, to combat her loneliness. As a scientist, she loves to incorporate a little bit of her work into her jewelry. You can find pictures of bacteria, red blood cells, DNA migrating on a gel or human cells taken under the microscope in some of her pieces. She has also a blog where she documents all her travel around the world.

Gin’s travel blog: Darwin on the rocks

Gin’s jewelry: Etsy and Facebook

How did you start/get involved with your project?

-When I moved to the UK last year I didn’t find a job straight away and I killed my time by making some jewelry inspired by science and continued to write about my travels in a blog.

What motivates you?

-I wanted to meet and talk to people because I was feeling lonely. It was also a good way to create what I had in mind for a long time but never took the time to do it

Tell us about an obstacle, or obstacles you had to overcome to get to where you are.

-I’m a shy person and talking to strangers to promote my work was not an easy thing to do! Especially since English is not my mother tongue.. I was a bit scared at the beginning but now I really enjoy it 🙂

What do you hope to achieve in the future?

-I would love to live from my craft but for the moment it’s still too unpredictable.

Who is your role model?

-I never really had a role model, a lot of people inspired me throughout my life. But one person really impressed me with his way of seeing science and life in general. It was my first employer. He was the team leader of our research unit and he had a myopathy and could only move his hands and talk. He knew he was going to die soon but was still full of life and so interesting to talk to. He motivates me not only living for a job ! That life was full of other experiences too.

What’s your secret superpower?

-Coffee!!

Favorite tip for self motivation/productivity/organizing etc.

-I tried to use to-do-list and it kind of works!

How did you hear about GGB?

-It’s my friend Hannah from the Yorkshire Geek Alliance (meetup group) that was looking for another officer so she could start a chapter in Leeds. I’ve never head about that before but when she explained the concept I found it awesome!

Do you have any words of wisdom for your fellow GGBrunchers?

-Life is too short to let fear make big decisions for you.
