GGB DFW Cosplay Brunch
The DFW ladies gathered in a unique and inspiring location this month for our Cosplay-themed brunch: the Dallas Makerspace. This community workshop has an extensive array of tools, equipment, and classes in everything from woodworking and blacksmithing to 3-D design and electronics. We ate brunch from Panera in Makerspace’s interactive room – an ideal spot to show off our cosplaying and crafting skills!
After we ate, we were treated to a talk on leatherworking and other cosplay construction by armor builder and cosplayer Christina Revis of Revision. Christina showed us some of her pieces, including some wet-molded leather breastplates and an in-process pink foam sword. She discussed her own process for crafting some of her cosplay items and gave recommendations for materials and techniques.
We also had a cosplay contest, judged by Christina and the GGB officers. The contest participants each introduced their characters and explained how they had put together their costumes – we had some seriously talented ladies in the house! The characters included Hawkgirl from Justice League (1st place), the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella (2nd place), Hannah from Rat Queens (3rd place), Squirtle the Pokemon, Julian from Animal Crossing, and Botan from Yu Yu Hakusho. There were a lot of wonderful costumes on ladies who didn’t participate in the official contest, too!
The raffle items for this week’s brunch were designed to make a crafter’s and cosplayer’s heart sing: a leather mask, containers for crafting items, a cosplay design book from Joanne’s, a gift certificate for wigs, and a gift certificate for Joanne’s.
Our next event will be our semi-annual co-ed party, which will have an anime theme. It will take place at 7:30pm on Saturday, July 11, and will be located at Area 51 Gaming and Collectibles in Grapevine. Everyone is welcome, so come play games, cosplay or just brag about your favorite anime character, and go big in our raffle!
