GGB: Baton Rouge Inaugural “Geek as You Are” Brunch
What do you do when you move to a city where you don’t really know anyone or haven’t made friends yet? You establish a brand new chapter of Geek Girl Brunch, send some invites, make a Facebook group, and BRUNCH! That is just what the officers of the Geek Girl Brunch: Baton Rouge Chapter did.
Since we were all new and meeting for the first time, we chose a theme that would encompass all of the far reaching genres, universes, and volumes of geekdom. We chose “GEEK AS YOU ARE” as the inaugural theme for our brunch at Portebello’s. We had an intimate turn out, but it seemed perfect, nonetheless. Our group took to conversation with ease and enjoyed it very much.
In Louisiana, the word “Brunch” has a special connotation. The traditional menu is infused with the elements that are signature to Louisiana’s famous cuisine. A Bloody Mary is not just a Bloody Mary, its spicy (and half price)! The Eggs Benedict isn’t just egg with ham on top of a English muffin dolloped with hollandaise. We put those eggs atop a crab cake and toasted french bread with cayenne hollandaise sauce! The brunchees did enjoy bottomless mimosas. Officer Jessica enjoyed the Open Face Breakfast Sandwich, which actually seemed to be a burger in disguise! Could it have been a fan of Bob’s Burgers and dressed itself accordingly?
The Brunchettes were encouraged to attend this first brunch sporting their own Fandom outfits. Brunchee Margaret stole the show with her steam-punk inspired dress. She used a color palate of rich burgundy and royal blues trimmed with earthy tones. The pickups in that skirt are to die for! Officer Roxanne sported her Disney passion by wearing a Torrid striped, floral dress with hidden Mickey icons. Officer Jessica shared her love of the Alien films and Jurassic Park films with a mash-up t-shirt. A wide assortment of fandoms, we have.
Taking inspiration from the various blogs of our fellow Geek Girl Brunch chapters, the officers want to provide favors and an opportunity for prizes. Officers Jessica and Roxanne prepared chocolate covered pretzels completed to represent light sabers, red for the darkside and blue for the lightside. Each Brunchette went home with a healthy dose of the Force. For raffle prizes, the Officers filled mason jars with nail polish, nail kits, and nail wraps. Brunchee Emily went home with the Little Mermaid’s Ursula themed mason jar and Brunchee Margaret went home with the Wonder Woman themed mason jar. Enjoy your future manicures, ladies!
All in all, this first brunch turned out great! We’re happy to say we’ve found a new group of friends in the “Red Stick”. We look forward to our future outings, craft days, and growing friendships between these wonderful women. That’s the Johnny Karate way… er I mean… that how we build each other up. Sorry, I just finished re-watching Parks & Rec.
