GGB Chicago – What have we been up to?
Sailor Moon, Back to the Future, Star Wars, and X-Files – Oh my!
The Chicago chapter of Geek Girl Brunch has been busy over the past few months! Our chapter has only been in existence for just under a year, and we’re still getting into a rhythm of scheduling our brunches and writing these posts.
Here’s what we’ve been up to since last August!
International Sailor Moon Day Brunch
This was our biggest brunch yet with nearly 40 people in attendance! Taking place in August at the Cozy Corner Cafe in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, we enjoyed traditional diner brunch and got to be excited about the resurgence of one of our favorite childhood fandoms.
The organizers of International Sailor Moon Day in Chicago were in attendance and helped draw people to the brunch. It was also our first opportunity to touch base with an awesome local collaborator – Monica from Geeks A Go Go.
Overall, it was a great brunch in terms of community exposure and letting people know what Geek Girl Brunch is all about!
OUTATIME Brunch
October 21st marked “Back to the Future Day” – the day Marty McFly arrives in 2015 to try and change the life of his future self. We couldn’t resist throwing a brunch to celebrate this date.
One of our officers, Sarah, fashioned goodie boxes that looked like Rubik’s cubes! For that Back to the Future touch, we added 80s themed candy and Cubs favors.
Township was the host of our brunch – just across the street from our previous brunch location! Their brunch menu was brand new at this point, but it was delicious. More than one of our officers has been back to enjoy their brunch offerings since!
Star Wars: Holiday Special Brunch
Due to the release of The Force Awakens in December, we couldn’t pass up having a Star Wars themed brunch around the holiday season!
A small group of us met up at Cafe Mustache near the California Blue Line stop in Logan Square, Chicago.
We indulged in a carefully curated brunch menu, which included their homemade Breakfast Burrito (pictured above) and many custom cocktails!
Along with brunch, we traded theories and speculation about The Force Awakens. We also collected toys to donate to Toys for Tots for the holiday season.
Reopening the X-Files Brunch
January brought the return of the hit show The X-Files. Our officer, Taylor, lived and breathed The X-Files before it went off the air in 2002, so a brunch was in order!
We colored and brunched with other X-Philes at Orange (or Orange With a Peel) in Roscoe Village, Chicago. Their menu had something for everyone, and we were even featured on the restaurant’s social media. The managers of the restaurant loved our group!
Some unique features of Orange are their orange flavored coffee, pear bellinis, and their take on the traditional Eggs Benedict.
What’s next for the Chicago chapter?
In March, had a fun get together in honor of the local convention C2E2 with our friends at Geek Girl Pen Pals. A post on that coming soon!
As for our brunches, we have one highlighting video games coming up on Sunday, April 24th. Watch our social media feeds for updates!
Lastly, if you ever happen to be in the area from another chapter – we would love to meet you! Contact us via e-mail or on our Facebook.
Signing off for now from the Windy City,
