GGB Fresno’s The Spy Who “Brunched” Me
A short story inspired by “true” events.
MISSION 1– Code Word: BRUNCH
TARGET: Yard House
GPS: 36° 50′ 53.8944” N 119° 47′ 21.5232” W
ETA: 1800
OBJECTIVE: Locate 007’s position. Must have visual. Do not intercept.
The evening was cold and foggy but we were able to locate our target. The Yard House sits in the middle of a crowded shopping center, very public, ideal for a standard surveillance OP. Our team wouldn’t draw much attention there; just a group of ladies having a “girls night.”
We got a table and ordered sustenance and drinks, not exactly on-duty protocol but blending in is essential. Our youngest Agent, Melena, recently had a birthday so our Quartermaster saw fit to gift her with some flashy new tech. The design was stunning: an ornate necklace with functionality. It concealed various useful compounds such as chloroform, sodium pentothal, and other formulas that would render most human helpless. Nothing fatal, of course. We’re not animals. Our recon specialist, Julie, ascertained information regarding 007’s objective. Based on the data we had little time but the location wasn’t far. Our mission remained on track. No one was familiar with “Spectre” but we were determined find out how 007 is involved.
MISSION 2 — Code Word: SPECTRE
TARGET: Edward’s Cinema
GPS: 36° 50′ 57.5448” N 119° 47′ 14.5932” W
ETA: 1935
OBJECTIVE: Monitor 007’s mission. Remain undetected.
Two of our team members had to be extracted for separate assignments. We thanked them for their expertise before parting ways. We moved through the crowd with vigilance and gained position in the theater. It was here we realized “Spectre” was unknown to 007 as well. He isn’t directly involved but it seems he believes the connection to him is personal. Us veterans at the agency are familiar with his past difficulties. Given his tendency to go rogue, it would seem he isn’t handling the traumas well. This is what brought us on his tail in the first place. M didn’t want him to have as much freedom as he did under our recently departed leader. The remainder of what we witnessed is far too sensitive and has been deemed CLASSIFIED. We can report that this was 007’s final mission.
Good luck, Bond. We thank you for your service.
