GGB Ft Lauderdale – Geek Girl Comics Brunch

May’s Fort Lauderdale Chapter brunch theme was Geek Girl Comics, and we celebrated women and queer characters and comic creators at Milk Money Bar & Kitchen / Warsaw Coffee Company in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  For anyone who is even remotely interested in comics – whether as a seasoned reader or a neophyte wondering where to start – this was definitely the brunch to attend.

Free Comic Book Day 2018 saw over thirty exclusive titles released at local comic stores. Thanks to Tate at Tate’s Comics in Lauderhill, each of our brunchettes scored issues in their goody bags. FCBD stickers from Tates and other goodies from the women comic creators who set up shop at the FCBD events at Tates were also in the bags. Pinback buttons featuring our favorite femme (and not-so-femme) superheroes – She-Hulk, Batwoman, Spiderwoman, Captain Marvel… to name a few – were also gifts, as were stickers of She-Hulk and Batwoman. Femme-spiring f-empowering pencils also went home with our attendeess in adorable BAM! POW! colorful drawstring backpacks. Movie promotional items for I Feel Pretty (2018) were also included. If that wasn’t enough, each attendee also got an advanced reader copy of two new titles: Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco and Flamecaster by Cinda Williams Chima.

Another full house of brunch-goers and another brunch where everyone went home a raffle winner. Raffle prizes this time were chock-full of comic trades and graphic novels including named titles for heroes Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Spider-Gwen. As any avid comic reader knows, most comics don’t feature superheroes in spandex at all. Fantasy and horror comics also took center stage at our brunch including titles like Pretty Deadly, The Wicked + The Divine, Bitch Planet, The Prince and the Dressmaker, and the first two volumes of the Power & Magic: Queer Witch Comic Anthology Series. But it wasn’t just the books! Funko Pops of Bombshells Batwoman, Black Panther, and Nebula also found new homes. As did a Thor Ragnarock “action figure” (yeah, right, it’s a Ken doll!), some Hulk goodies, a whole Spider-Gwen gift set including mug and headband, and lots of awesome mash-up prints by Lord Mesa.
