GGB Kaiserslautern- Magical Girl Brunch

Geek Girl Brunch Kaiserslautern is the first international chapter! We’re hoping there will be more in the future and the European chapters can plan a get together. For our launch, we choose the Magical Girl theme. Why? Because there is nothing like having a big opener with the message that we are not damsels, we can save ourselves! We’re all magical girls right? Plus, most of us started our geeky awakening with Sailor Moon. It only seemed fitting.

Our brunch location took place at Sam Kullman’s Diner in Kaiserslautern and it did not disappoint. It was the cutest 50’s style diner and the breakfast was really, really good. It made some of us homesick in a good way. Good ol’ American style breakfast – oh and did we mention they had awesome milkshakes and alcoholic coffee? Yeah…score!

KtownGGBdrinksThis weekend Geek Girl Brunch officially became international thanks to our Kaiserslautern Chapter in Germany! Although both officers, Cree and Ashley, are American, the chapter is a dynamic mix of both Americans and Germans. One thing is for sure, no matter what country brunchettes are from they can all speak geek.

Get to know the KTown officers in the interview below. Find out what it’s like being an American geek abroad, why they wanted to become a Geek Girl Brunch Officer and more!

The Kodama Mani by Melissa Grey for Studio Ghibli Brunch

kodama-nails-00-header
In honor of GGB NY’s Studio Ghibli brunch, I turned to one of my favorite Miyazaki-helmed films, Princess Mononoke, for inspiration. With its unparalleled animation and strong aesthetic, the Ghibli oeuvre provides a ton of nail art design possibilities, but I wanted to go with something simple and easy to replicate for this tutorial. I’ve always loved the kodama — the transluscent tree spirits that make that slightly unsettling but also kind of cute clacking sound — and what they symbolize, particularly at the film’s end. To get a creepy/cute kodama mani, just follow these simple steps.

The location, Teasim, provided a nice warm environment and a great space for geeky ladies to connect and laugh their afternoon away over great food and drinks. If we count the amount of waffles, french toast and eggs ordered it would be a secret number we can’t tell you, but trust us it was good! Continue reading

REFLECTIONS

2014 is over and 2015 is shaping up to be a great year for Geek Girl Brunch. We’re launching chapters in cities all over the world and we could not be more excited! Giving ourselves the opportunity and excuse to make IRL friends with fellow passionate geeks was our genesis, after all! But we also want to make sure that Brunch is not just Brunch. GGB is about creating a community, providing a network and establishing a safe space for identifying Geek Girls to talk to each other. We can’t ignore the problems we have all been faced with over the past year, as individuals, as a community, as a city, as a nation, as citizens of Earth.
